About this program
'Big Ideas':
- A Microorganism (also called microbe) is a living organism that is too small to be seen with the naked eye but is visible under a microscope. They feed, grow and reproduce.
- Microorganisms include bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi and protozoa.
- Decomposer microorganisms cause the process of decomposition. Foodstuffs exposed to bacteria and fungi
- (mould) can threaten future food security.
- Pathogenic microorganisms can cause diseases.
- Microorganisms have great health benefits and can be used in the production of some food and drinks.
- The spread of harmful microorganisms can be avoided through hygienic practices and vaccinations
Focus: This study aligns with 'Marvellous Micro-organisms' from the Primary Connections series.
This program reflects the new English, Mathematics, HSIE Science, Creative Arts and PDHPE Syllabus outcomes.
Important information
Activities
Students will:
- learn about 5 different microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi and algae)
- complete an experiment that highlights the importance of handwashing and good hygiene to avoid pathogens that make us sick
- use a microscope to observe and identify microorganisms that live in different water samples
- compete in teams to complete a decomposition timeline and learn about the role microbes play in the decaying process
- learn about food preparation, preservation and the role of additives in processed food
Cost
$5 per student
This is a 4 hour program from time of arrival at REEC.
